A musical miscellany

My happy place is hiding with my headphones on. Music has always been an escape. When I first started a real job in an office, I had to train myself how to work without it.

I like all kinds of music and I enjoy well-crafted lyrics. Songs which don’t say anything have me swiftly reaching for the off button (At the River by Groove Armada, for example, why did they bother? Just make it instrumental.) I am very happy to listen to dance music, just don’t make me think a lyric is going somewhere, only to find out it isn’t.

I also really enjoy playing with song titles, and anyone else who does. Spotify did a great advertising campaign using lyrics a couple of years ago. I wrote about it when I talked about how music taps into your audience’s stories.

I’m currently enjoying listening to the Indie Business Club podcast by and . The added bonus is their genius song-title inspired episode titles. This week’s is I Bet You Look Good On The Timeline and I can’t help singing the next line in my head.

Recently, I’ve been using Spotify more. I still find it weird that I can listen to a new album without going into HMV and buying it, but that’s the world we’re in. And one of the things I like about it is creating playlists – and listening to other people’s.

I recommended subscribing to in last week’s edition of re:writes. The same day he published The North Shore and included his playlist for driving around Hawaii. Pop it on and dream of summer.

Music transports you to places, in both time and place. No Regrets by Robbie Williams came on the radio as I was driving back from Norfolk on Sunday. It was on a mix tape I made at university and I always had it in my car, back when I owned one with a tape deck.

My friend writes Collect Us All and as part of this, he creates a new playlist on Spotify each month.

Also on that drive back from Norfolk, we heard Rob Beckett’s Cover Lover segment on Radio 2. It took us a couple of seconds and then my husband and I were yelling.

What was the song? Don’t Look Back In Anger by The Wurzels.

They’ve done a cover of Common People too.

My favourite cover is the Pet Shop Boys’ version of My Girl by Madness.

I also recently discovered Pet Shop Boys wrote music to accompany My Beautiful Laundrette and I am loving it.

What’s on your playlist?

Is there an album you’re loving at the moment or a song you think should be played more? Let me know in the comments.
