Running a business is a political act

I’ve seen a couple of people complain about “political” posts on LinkedIn. Running a business is a political act.

You’ve chosen to build your own business, not work for someone else. That’s a choice about your independence and how you want to live.

You’ve chosen to work in a particular field. That’s a choice about the difference you want to make and how you want to spend your working time and talents.

Your business reflects your values. What do you believe?

Your business follows your way of thinking.

What happens to the profits you make?

Where does your business fit into your community?

Do you choose to support a cause, or contribute to society in some way other than the economic benefit of you running a business?

If you’re an employer, you are responsible for other people’s livelihoods.

You make decisions about suppliers. Who do you buy from? What tech do you use?

If you’re a product-based business, where are your goods made? What goes into them? Who does that work?

You make decisions every day which have a political effect. You are not isolated from the world around you.

Your choices feed in to what others believe is acceptable, and where money flows to.

And we all know that money talks far more than any LinkedIn post.
